OPP warns ATV riders to be careful out there

Two collisions in recent weeks sparks warning

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding off-road vehicle operators to prioritize safety after two collisions in recent weeks in our listening area.

In both cases, the riders suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The OPP emphasizes that wearing the right safety gear, like a helmet, is essential to reducing the risk of severe injury. Additionally, riders should ensure they are obeying local laws and regulations, and under no circumstances should anyone operate an ATV while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Key Safety Tips for ATV Riders

  1. Wear Proper Protective Gear: Always wear an approved helmet, along with other safety gear like gloves, eye protection, long sleeves, and sturdy boots to protect against potential falls or debris.

  2. Conduct a Pre-Ride Inspection: Before hitting the trails, check the brakes, tire pressure, lights, and fuel levels. Ensuring that your ATV is in proper working condition helps prevent accidents.

  3. Ride at a Safe Speed: Many accidents happen due to excessive speed. Stay within posted speed limits and slow down around turns or rough terrain.

  4. Stick to Designated Trails: Avoid riding in unauthorized areas or crossing private property without permission. Off-road trails are designed to handle ATV traffic safely.

  5. Avoid Riding Alone: Whenever possible, ride with a partner and let someone know your route and expected return time. In the event of an emergency, having someone nearby can make a big difference.

  6. Take a Safety Course: New riders, or those who haven’t been on an ATV in a while, are encouraged to take a safety course. Learning about safe riding techniques and trail etiquette can improve your skills and confidence.

  7. Stay Sober: The OPP stresses the dangers of operating any vehicle under the influence. Alcohol and drugs can impair your judgment, reaction time, and overall safety.

By following these safety guidelines, riders can help reduce the risk of accidents and enjoy a safe experience on Eastern Ontario’s beautiful trail network.
