Judge to decide if Seeley’s Bay murder suspect was criminally responsible

Murder took place in June 2021

A judge will decide in mid-January whether Jay Slade, accused of murdering Colin Gill in Seeley’s Bay in June 2021, was criminally responsible for the crime.

Slade, diagnosed with schizophrenia, is charged with first-degree murder, indignity to a dead body, and assault causing bodily harm.

The defense argues Slade's mental illness, particularly a psychotic delusion, drove him to kill Gill to prevent "World War Three," while the Crown contends Slade knew his actions were wrong, citing inconsistencies in his testimony and evidence of substance-induced psychosis.

Justice John Johnston will rule on January 15.
