Bobs Lake boat crash suspect to remain in custody in Kingston

Bail hearing delayed until Nov. 29

The bail hearing for Matthew Splinter, accused in a fatal boat crash on Bobs Lake, has been postponed to Nov. 29.

The 44-year-old South Frontenac man appeared briefly by video in a Kingston courtroom Thursday, where his defence requested more time to review extensive evidence.

Splinter faces multiple charges, including three counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death and impaired operation causing death.

The charges stem from a speedboat collision on May 18, VIctoria Day Long Weekend, which killed three young adults, Riley Orr, Juliette Cote, and Kaila Bearman, and injured five others.

Ontario Provincial Police arrested Splinter in late October after a five-month investigation involving collision experts and forensic teams.

Crown Attorney Shawn Eagles indicated readiness to proceed but understood the defence’s need for more preparation.

The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Victoria Day weekend in the Buck Bay area, resulting in the speedboat landing atop a fishing boat.
